As the Mississippi River flows through its last bends before reaching New Orleans, it courses through a tapestry woven from violent storms, calamitous floods, raucous celebrations, and sacred mysteries, all held together by unusually close bonds of family and friendship. In a place where parade float trinkets and tiny plastic toys hidden in pastry can take on larger-than-life meaning, the secrets that add the most spice to life are the ones everyone seems to already know.
king cake baby recounts the story of the Rocheleau family of St. John the Baptist parish and a mother’s all-consuming love, calming of the angriest of tempests but also sufficiently strong to spawn them. As the outer bands of a fearsome hurricane howl through the live oaks, Bobby Rocheleau must come to terms with the mysteries of this love and try to calm the storms that rage within.

This novel has it all: suspense, humor, memorable characters, an engaging plot, and a setting in New Orleans which makes the story very interesting. Not being too familiar with New Orleans and its environs, I learned alot about the local culture, dialect, food, landscape, festivals, and the Gulf of Mexico as a hurricane approaches. I highly recommend this novel - it is well written and entertaining. I enjoyed reading it from start to finish.Product details

king cake baby eBook Scott Butler Reviews
Maybe it started with hurricane Katrina or the Saints winning the super bowl or LSU's college football dominance or even HBO's series Treme but I can't get enough of Louisiana. Now comes King Cake Baby by Scott Butler. The story takes you through the lives and relationships of south LA families who have many faults and tragic consequences but Mr. Butler provides the reader with enough insight into their soul that you can't help but hope they make it through on top. You get everything with King Cake Baby suspense, who dunnit, crazy characters that come together like a good gumbo dipped in heavy Cajun accents with a heaping of wry humor. I searched the net but couldn't find other books by Mr. butler so for a first novel it's impressive. Another James Lee Burke in the making!
Not since "A Confereracy of Dunces" has a book captured the comic and tragic character nuances that thrive in New Orleans. Scott takes you on a journey made from one dramatic act that impacts the lives of family members through multiple generations. Warm up your "hooked on phonics" skills as you will be speaking Cajun before your done with this story. I found myself reading the lines out loud to get the hang of the dialect and once I got into its rythm the story unfolded into multiple layers which kept me waiting, antipating the next float in his parade. And like "Dunces", the characters are tragic and funny as you will hear yourself laugh out loud. It won't take you long to read this page turner but you will know South Louisiana better and will want to know your family better. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for Mr. Butler's second adventure.
