Silver Medal Winner, 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards

When PJ Marshall’s father, Butch—about to present evidence of illegal timber and oil company practices to Congress—disappears from his Wisconsin Northwoods home under a cloud of suspicion, PJ embarks on a grueling cross-country search. And when he's drawn into the simmering conflict between the aging activist and a pair of industry giants, PJ begins to unravel a web of lies and violence designed to keep Hansen Timber and Bighorn Oil out of the cross-hairs of public scrutiny.

And to silence those trying to expose their secrets.

PJ's sister died when he was four. His mother—in a car crash that nearly took his father as well—when he was sixteen. As a result, his youth was spent in a haze of addiction-fueled anger and guilt. Now, after a lifetime of unwavering support from his father, PJ’s wounds have begun to heal.

Suddenly, Butch is gone.

The mysterious 911 call accusing him of kidnapping and assault. The out of state warrant implicating him in a theft and extortion conspiracy. Armed with corroborating evidence inexplicably left behind on Butch's computer, local authorities question PJ on his father’s recent activities and a file named ‘Tim-Oil’—recently scrubbed from the hard drive. Unwilling to accept the allegations against his father, and with the investigation turning to what he himself knows and may be hiding about ‘Tim-Oil’, PJ knows it's up to him to uncover the truth.

PJ's lonely, desperate search. The discovery of hidden files containing Butch’s planned testimony and years of research. Hansen Timber's illegal clear-cuts in the Pacific Northwest. Bighorn Oil's illicit offsite wells in Wyoming Indian territory. Political corruption. Pending legislation in Congress—paid for by company shills—that would not only wipe the slates clean, but would net Hansen and Bighorn untold millions. With everything to lose, two corporate titans willing to do anything to win.

Anything.

From a remote camp in the North Cascades to the offices of a Chicago high-rise, PJ confronts those charged with the companies’ survival—clashing with friends, new foes and past demons alike. Beaten in both body and spirit, and with his father’s fate growing ever more uncertain, PJ returns to Wisconsin and a remote hunting cabin to face the one person who knows everything.

And in the end, maybe even come to terms with his past.

If it's not too late.

The Ascent of PJ Marshall edition by Brian J Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks

I wanted to like this story. I thought the dialog was well done, but it suffered from some issues that lower the rating. While the dialog flowed, there were several instances where it just ran on, becoming banter and slowing down the story. I think that's where an experienced editor might make a difference. Also, as mentioned in other reviews the structure of the novel made it hard to follow and caused re-reading to remember where I left off.
The author can write and create some good imagery. The opening scene is proof of that.
Unfortunately, though, I couldn't stick with it and failed to finish the book. I will look at his next offering if there is one, though.

The Ascent of PJ Marshall edition by Brian J Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Glad to get this free from for readers. Good story. Will seek out more from this author.
The very detailed descriptions keep you immersed in the moment. Like other reviewers, I had difficulty following the characters from chapter to chapter.
Not my typical genre but I found this book hard to put down and had no problem reading a hundred pages at a time. With a good editor and publisher, this book could have been a best seller.
I found the novel involving a nd multilayered w a number of concurrent plot lines but its finale proves to be rather disappointing and fairy tale like.
the plot was good but jumped back and forth in time too much which made it hard to follow if you weren't reading it in one sitting.
The green issue pervates this storline and left me thinking that it overwhelmend the novel. I for one felt that following the characters was very hard. Sometimes returning to previous chapters to understand thier motivations.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and really like the author's writing style. After reading the other reviews I was a bit skeptical at first, but I had no problems following the story, and in fact, rather enjoyed the bits and pieces of the past that helped create the current Butch and PJ and their present situation. I agree that it would be easier to read in one sitting, but I read it over 4 days and had no problems. I will have no problem suggesting this book to family and friends.
