"Band On The Run" is the over-the-top and highly entertaining tale of Mellowtron, an out-of-control rock band on its first tour of America, as told in memoir form by their uber-controlling manager, James Blank. The band sets out on a savage journey from Seattle to New York City in a customized Winnebago, recording songs on tour stops along the way with the intention of having a completed album when they reach the Big Apple. Their twisted escapades along the highways and backstages of America are chronicled in all their vulgar hilarity. Along the way, many of rock and roll's most diabolical events are recounted by author Matt Syverson. "Band On The Run" is a tale of sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, and more drugs, so read at your own risk.

Band On The Run Matt Syverson 9780615505558 Books

Band on the Run is less a story than it is a collection of all the odd, useless famous band trivia that the author knows. He holds these facts together with a lot of filler in the form of a sometimes amusing, sometimes rushed, and sometimes repetitive story about a fictional band called Mellowtron.

Despite the rushed storytelling and very hard to believe plot, there is humor to be found in the oddball characters and the drug-fueled antics of an almost up-and-coming rock band. Unfortunately, most of the amusing bits occur before half of the story is told. Once the band goes on tour and gets an entertainment lawyer and a doped out following, the storyline becomes repetitive and boring, bogged down (maybe I should have said bonged down) with concert descriptions that even the author admits become redundant and sessions of jamming while higher than the sun in a Texas sky.

As the band’s popularity grows, every concert is a smashing success, and as a reader I wondered whether the narrator, who conveniently happens to be the band’s manager, is being honest or if his dream of managing one of the greatest bands of all time is starting to infringe on the reality he reports to us readers. I also think the story takes place about 10-15 years too late. The great bands of the 60s and 70s are supposed to be the inspiration for Mellowtron, but rock of that caliber is long dead. The story would have been more believable in the 80s or early 90s.

And then comes the author’s note at the end which tries to make us believe that the whole story was true. A reader would have to be more stoned than the members of Mellowtron to believe that. While good for a few laughs, I wasn’t able to suspend enough belief to really like this one, and I did a lot of skimming towards the end. I’ll pass on the sequel.

Band On The Run Matt Syverson 9780615505558 Books Reviews

"Band on the Run" is a great book that takes you along for the ride with a dysfunctional rock n roll band. The writing paints a picture of being on the road, the smells, the sights, the drugs, the booze, and the rise. The trivia thrown throughout the escapades not only showed off the authors knowledge but brought the story into a parallel reality. A great read that once started can't be put down. Can't wait for the Mellowtron reunion tour. I will have to read the authors other book "Black Dog".
Not only did I laugh out loud repeatedly while reading this book, I also could have sworn that the author was talking about people that I've known personally, ha ha! If you've been to a lot of concerts over a lot of years, or if you've been at all involved in the music industry, you're going to recognize some of these characters. The prissy-pants lead singer. The doofus drummer. The chain-smoking, nervous manager. The scary lawyer. The bizarre fans. They're all there. And some of the author's descriptions are seriously funny. I laughed until I cried at the description of the Winnebago. Looking forward to reading the sequel!
This book is a real light read about a fictitious rock band and their short rise to the top. It was a lot of fun to read. If you are looking for something with some heavy, deep meaning, look elsewhere. But if you want an enjoyable book that will make you laugh and having you cheering for the characters, this is the book for you. Oh, and let's not forget the many rock history references throughout the book. I guess you could even call it semi-educational.
Geez! This one stirred my thoughts and feelings like a blender. What a way cool book, and what a surprise it turned out to be. I must admit that, upon first flush, I was really wondering if I had just committed to reading a giant, adolescent, waste of time. I am happy to say that that was not the case and this book turned out to be a really great and fun read. Yeah, it has gross body part and function humor, and it is, in a way, irresponsible as hell but...it is very well written and portrays the wild and crazy rock and roll lifestyle with a fair amount of accuracy. After all, you have to admit that MOST rock and roll bands don't make the news because they are angels, right?? Huh, huh?? Ok!

Written in the first person, the book takes you along on a rollicking, roller coaster ride of sex (not much), drugs (tons) and rock and roll (tons) as the band tours the country coast to coast in its customized Winnebago named the Sopwith Camel. Ride along as our heroes morph from the feckless garage band of their origin into the potentially huge stars they are struggling to become. Helped along by their "jack of all trades" manager, driver, roadie, guidance counselor, cheerleader and chronicler James Blank, and their ex-Mafia employed lawyer, the book describes (in a fairly believable manor), the ups and downs...the sheer craziness of life on the road. I liked the character development of everyone (including the dog Crisco). I imagine there will be readers who are offended by the constant references to drugs and their use, but they need to take the book's initial warning and not start reading it or...GET OVER IT!!! (Thank you to The Eagles) and enjoy it for what it is...an entertaining, well written, read. 4 ½ stars for this one.
